Swimming Pool Covers

Swimming pool covers are designed to help protect your swimming pool from dangerous outside elements and intruders. They are especially useful for when you are away from your home. When you leave your house everything else gets locked up and protected including your house, your garage and your cars; why should your swimming pool be any different?

Swimming pools are very large investments and deserve to be protected just like you protect your other large investments; house, cars, boats. By investing in a swimming pool cover you will be protecting your pool from leaves, debris, intruders, and anything else that may find its way into an open pool. Furthermore, swimming pool covers can prevent serious accidents from happening such as young children or pets accidentally falling into the pool when they are not being watched. In fact, special security covers can be purchased that can hold the weight of several adults at once!

Since pool covers work to keep debris out of your pool, they also contribute to a cleaner pool. A clean pool requires less chemical treatments, less cleaning and less work for your filter to do. All of these things translate to less money being spent on pool maintenance. So in others words, a swimming pool cover will end up saving you money in the long run.

Swimming Pool Cover Options

When it comes to the design of swimming pool covers, homeowners have many options. They are available in all different styles, shapes, and sizes and they are designed so that they do not get in the way of other water features you may have, such as fountains or spas. There are different materials to choose from, depending on how durable you want your cover to be. The common materials include vinyl, plastic or mesh. Some covers are opaque and others are transparent and you can select according to what style you like best.

Pool covers can be removed either by a motorized waterproof unit or by manually removing them. Motorized waterproof units are mounted on the edge of your pool and they will automatically pull the swimming pool cover back for you. If you want to save yourself some money, time and energy then consider using a semi-automatic motor. Semi-automatic motors are less expensive then fully motorized units and they require you to help it along. But it still works much faster then if you are trying to put the cover on manually.

What about maintenance you ask? Certain pool covers are virtually maintenance free because they are self-cleaning. It doesn’t get better then a swimming pool cover that cleans itself! But it’s true, many models come with pumps or draining systems to remove excess puddles caused from melting snow or heavy rains. You can also find covers that come with lock-and-key systems so that the edges can't be mess around with.

Another benefit to having a pool cover comes in the form of lower energy costs. Money is saved through lower energy costs when you seal your pool off with solar covers. Without a pool cover, your swimming pool with naturally lose heat when it is not being used. Heat and energy are lost through exposure to the wind and sun. The wind cools it off and the sun evaporates much of the water. Then during the night when the temperatures drop, the pool is cooled off dramatically. In order to get your pool warmed up enough to use, a lot of energy is required. But with a pool cover that heat is stored within the water, saving you money on having to use energy to heat it back up. All types of covers will trap in heat, but solar covers are specifically designed to seal in the warmth.

Covers are designed for specific purposes and it may be necessary to have more then one to suit all of your pools needs. Some are used to trap in heat while others are designed for durability, weather resistance and uses at different times of the day. Regardless of which type(s) you select, a swimming pool cover will save you money on energy costs and help to protect your investment. In the long run, it is well worth it to invest in a swimming pool cover.
